Translation Please

What's Jack up to? Oh Jack is a happy camper now that he has the DD to bark at and fight with his day is that much more complete.

Guess what I got my hot little hands on? My very own copy of the much coveted Black Issue of Italian Vogue. The one fashionistas in the NYC are going ga-ga over. Well my DH came home yesterday with a copy for me! It only took him checking 3 or 4 sold-out newsstands and finally hitting pay dirt in the Met Life building.

What a feast for the eyes and I would suspect the mind too if only I could read it. I'm thinking there are some really interesting articles in here dealing with race in the fashion industry. That darn Italian Vogue teases me with English titles and Italian articles. I'm dying to read the conversation with Bethann Hardison. But I'm sure with a little digging it will all turn up somewhere in cyberspace.

In the meantime, I'll be happy with the amazing pics and hope this is stand by Italian Vogue and Steven Meisel will actually bring about a change in the fashion industry and we can start to see a real global representation of beauty in print and in the runway. Are you listening American Vogue, Elle, Bazaar etc... You can read my past thoughts here. Now for a few pics!

Naomi

Tyra

Check out Karen Alexander!

Toccara Jones! Serving up a Pam Grier vibe. Can we talk about how stunning this is?

Ah fashion!

Best,
Kwana

P.S. Thanks so much for your comments on Changes yesterday. I want to keep it going. If you missed the post please check it out and comment here.

I really want to see this, too. Yay for Italian Vogue, pointing out a distinct problem the fashion industry just doesn't want to acknowledge.

I got my issue too!! I need to get another one for my cousin in Chicago who can't find it there.

This is definitely a collector's item! :-)

It is cool isn't it Kristen.

You can come to my place to see it Megan. I'll have it on display. Under glass!

I just knew you'd be one of the first to have it Brown Girl. You are so fashionable!

I remember reading fashion magazines as a teen and wondering why my "not a sample size" body wouldn't look good in any of it. I rarely saw anyone my size and if I did, it was usually with brown tape over their eyes in a "Glamour don't". I can't imagine what it did for your psyche to not see familiar faces in your magazines, but I think I have an idea.

Sure, these are aspirational magazines, but is the message we're sending to dream to be white?

Is it wrong to hope for a day when there isn't a "black issue"? When the pages of fashion magazines feature women of all shades and sizes and we can take it for granted that something like this was once a rarity?

That's my dream for my daughter and for yours...for all our daughters and their daughters to come. Here's to the rest of the world catching up to our dreams.

Those shots of Tyra and Toccara are AMAZING. Wow. Thanks for sharing...and I completely agree...I wish we didn't have to have the "black issue" (as gorgeous as it is) or what is known in my industry as the "diversity initiative".

And how cute is that DH. Love him.

Ellen I agree with you totally.
Thanks PVE and N. It would be great if we didn't have to have these type of issues.

Hey lady,
Did you know I speak Italian?! I'd be happy to translate that interview for you, preferably on-the-fly during a Knitsters night out with some yummy cocktails!
