Sweet 16

While I was sleeping you grew up, seemingly overnight

While I was blinking you grew older and time just passed me by

I don’t know how this happened that 16 years has passed

It really can’t be true

But the calendar says so, thou my heart it fights and says no
I have to give in and face the truth

Happy Birthday my Dear Babies, I will hold on to that right

To call you my Dear Babies with all of my might

You will always be my Dear Babies

Whether you are 16 or 60

Because you are the dearest things in the word forever and always to me

Love,
Mom

New Kid On The Block

What's Jack up to? Jack's making new friends. Let's hope he plays nice. It's not always easy for Jack ya know.

Meet Arya. Arya is the new girl on the block. She just moved in 2 doors down from us. Isn't she so pretty? She's a German short haired pointer which is a breed I've never heard of so there goes that. She's a lovely deep chocolate color that this picture doesn't begin to do justice.

Lucky Arya now lives with the most wonderful family with a great Mom and Dad and three wonderful children so I know she will be the most spoiled little dog ever.

To top things off today is her owner/mom's Birthday so happy birthday to my dear friend and neighbor Ritz!! I see you didn't learn a thing from me. LOL! Have a wonderful day.

Best,
Kwana

One, Two... THREE!!!

What's Jack up to? Well today Jack is feeling like he's practically grown up, little Mr. Big Stuff, You can't tell him he's not all that because...

Happy 3rd Birthday to
Jack today!

Wow, I can't believe my wild little oversized Yorkie is 3 years old today. In the time we've had Jack life has not been the same. There is never a dull or quiet day and yes, I complain but the joy and the smiles sure make up for it.

Three cheers for the Jackster!!!

Kwana

Happy Birthday Ma!!

Happy Birthday to my Mom today! Yep, that's her and I from when I was a little girl. Both of us smiling big and bright just like folks would do in one of those old Woolworth's photo booths. You can recognize the pic from my avatar to the right there.

As you can see from the pic below Ma has hardly changed at all, though now I'm the taller one. She's still gorgeous and fabulous and still the same bit of unpredictability she was back then. From her Psalm 23 tattoo, you never know what's in store with my mom. Not what dress she'll be wearing or what hair color will go with it. But that's the charm of Ms. Kay!

This weekend Ma staged a girl's night out at Roseland ballroom to celebrate her birthday. And when I say staged, I mean staged (guess I get a bit of my control tendencies from her). We had a great time dancing the night away to songs from the 50's to the 70's. All of us wearing tiara's that Ma supplied so folks in the club kept saying Happy Birthday to all of us.

It was a great night and so nice of her to share her birthday joy with all of us.

Happy Birthday Ma!!

We Love you!
DD, DS, DH and Jack

and

I Love You too!
Your daughter,
Kwana

The Party Goes On

What's Jack up to? Jack was a wild boy this morning. Running out the door and chasing behind the poor man that dared to ring our bell to deliver an early AM message. I swear we're going to get a bad rep, Jack and never get that million dollar check delivered.

Turns out my party is still going on. I was surprised last night by friends and neighbors with yet another cake at dinner. There is nothing nicer then spending a relaxing evening full of good food and laughs with folks you can let you hair down with. The older I get the more I appreciate the value of friends.

I hope you have plenty of cheer this weekend.

Best,
Kwana

With Thanks

I can't thank you all enough for all the love you've given me this week. You all really got me through my 40th birthday blues with style. I'm blessed to have the best family, friends and virtual friends in the world.
I'm so grateful.

The Universe left this wonderful note in my email box yesterday:

Happy Birrrrthday to Youuuu,
Happy Birrrrthday to Youuuu,
Happy Birrrrthday Dear Kwana,
Happy Birrrrthday to Youuuu!
A few years back, not so long ago, heaven and earth erupted into a major celebration with the news of your impending adventure into this very time and space.

You see, someone like Kwana Jackson doesn't come along all that often. In fact, there's never been a single one like you, nor is there ever ANY possibility that another will come again. You're an Angel among us. Someone, whose eyes see what no others will EVER see, whose ears hear what no others will EVER hear, and whose perspective and feelings will NEVER, ever be duplicated. Without YOU, the Universe, and ALL THAT IS, would be sadly less than it is.

Quite simply: You're the kind of person, Kwana,Who's hard to forget,A one-in-a-million To the people you've met.Your friends are as varied As the places you go,And they all want to tell you In case you don't know:That you make a big difference In the lives that you touch,By taking so little And giving so much!

Kwana, you are so AWESOME! For your birthday, friends and angels from every corner of the Universe, including buddies you didn't know you had, will be with you to wish you the HAPPIEST of days and an exciting new year in time and space. You won't be alone!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Kwana!

And it turns out I wasn't alone. You came out in droves. Here's a pic of my cake from last night. I wish you all could have been with me to have a taste. But you were in my heart.

Now it's time for me to tackle this new decade. GO ME and GO YOU. Let's make this our decade.

Much love to you all,
Kwana

Oh No! It's My Birthday

And it's a big one. 4-0.

I will not go into it graciously or smiling. I'll admit here it's hitting me. Hard. All the what ifs, why nots, coulda woulda shouldas, plus the extra pounds are messing with my mind.

I'm normally a bit melancholy on holidays and birthdays, but put on the brave face and count my blessings. And I'm sure I'll be doing that again on this one. But I'll also be saying under my breath, "oh crap, it's my freakin 40th birthday. Now what?"

If only I could be half as gracious as Eddy from Ab Fab here. When you have time watch and enjoy. No, make some time. You'll thank me.

Tomorrow I'll be coming on strong. Forty Fabulous and all that mess. Right?

Best,
Kwana

A Series of Unfortunate Events

What’s Jack up to? Jack is wearing himself out with the construction guys around this week. He doesn’t know what to do. One minute he’s barking like crazy the next he’s flopped dead on the couch. Me? I’m worn out too.

The Spring Break week was full of unfortunate events. Well, it started with me still out of sorts with my crazy backlash where I was in much better shape but not tip-top from my back going out. Then things just went wacky and all sorts of stuff kept happening.
The DH took his car for a check ending up needing breaks. Big money and in the shop they crashed his bumper. Who does that?

Then… I got a flat tire. On Good Friday coming from church.

Then… My DD’s last fish died right after speaking not so nicely about the fish. Hmmm....

Then…the worst happened. Blackberry fail! I’m sitting in church, my phone on silent. I look in my bag for a pen and my phone is lit up and going crazy. Huh? I get out of church and ¾ of my pictures are erased. Including my screensaver. My favorite pic of my Twins. I was devastated. I wanted to throw the phone out on the highway. Verizon is no help. Says the phone is bad and will give me a new one. It is no consolation. The memory is gone. A bee is in my bonnet and I can’t let it go. I feel there must be some way to bring them back. Nothing is ever just gone. Blackberry how can you fail me?

So…the Spring break week ended to go right into this. I woke up Monday morning exhausted after Easter and wishing I could sleep in but Dear Teen Twins had to get off to school and the DH off to work. Honestly, I had planned to go back for a nap. I thought the contractor was going to give me a call to discuss the final stair plans. Um…no.

The kids are gone and my DH is just out the door. I’m settled to write a blog post I was too exhausted to write the night before when Jack starts to bark like mad. I get out of bed look out the window and there are 2 trucks, 6 guys and my contractor (yeah, this could be the start of a great story but this is me) And I’m still in my nightgown (not a nice one) with hair sticking up like Woody Woodpecker. Oh Crap.

Help me Jack! I look He’s just barking and no help with finding clean clothes.
Quick grab ye old jeans and sweater from the top of the hamper pile, pull on boots smooth hair and go for it. Smile. You’re on! The week begins.

On an up note they are doing a fine job on my stairs. Contractors are great and adorable with thick Irish brogues. (yeah sounds like a book again.)

And soon my stairs will no longer be a danger. Pics to come.
Thanks for letting me gripe today. I needed to get all that out.
Let’s hope things are looking up.

Best,
Kwana

Wait! They are looking up! On this tax day I want to say Happy Birthday to Ceska!! One of my nearest, dearest and oldest friends. "Yeah girl, you are older than me. I'm holding onto these couple of months."
Ceska and I have been friends since we were maybe 10 or so on the play ground. I even held her hand in the delivery room with her first child one New Year's Eve night (the hand was never the same!) She's always had my back and sadly has the memory of an elephant. Darn. That's not so good. LOL.
So even though it's tax day. It's never a sad day for me because it's my crazy girl's birthday. I'll always think of us as roller skating disco diva's in the 80's.
Love ya Ces!

P.S. The Last Unfortunate Event, this post was supposed to post hours ago but I put the time in wrong. PM instead of AM. Sigh. Am I under a cloud?

Happy Birthday Dear PVE!

What's Jack up to? Jack's wishing all of you a Happy St. Patrick's Day! Have fun in your green and partying it up today. But please go easy peeps. Cheers!

And a super Happy Birthday to my friend Patricia Van Essche of PVE Designs.

You can check out the amazing artist and blog wonder here or just look up and see her handy work on my banner.

Patrica and I have been friends since back in the days when we were both still in the world of 7th avenue fashion. The friendship was cemented the day I discovered she had some sort of bewitching powers and predicted my twins even before my own doctor! Although I suspect since she had just given birth to her own twins she wanted some to follow her in the madness. Since then we've been thick as thieves in good times and so-so. Watching our babies grow up way too fast. Both moving from the city to the sort of country and working hard to make our dreams come true.
Patrica's works of art around my house. I know, lucky me.

Join me in 3 cheers to Patricia! Happy Birthday! May this year be all you wish for.

Much Love,

Kwana

Happy Birthday Nana!

What's Jack up to? It's a big time snow day here in New York. So Jack and I will have extra company with us. He's been bouncing around all weekend and is sure not not stop anytime soon.

Today is my Dear Nana's Birthday! Please join me in wishing this phenomenal woman in my life all the best. Nana is the rock in our family, always there to lend an ear or a hand. She even can keep Jack under control and can tame a teen twin with just a glance. Just like her birth month of March, Nana comes in like a lion but she's really as sweet as a lamb. We love you Nana!

"Touched by An Angel"
By Maya Angelou

We, unaccustomed to courage
exiles from delight
live coiled in shells of loneliness
until love leaves its high holy temple
and comes into our sight
to liberate us into life.
Love arrives
and in its train come ecstasies
old memories of pleasure
ancient histories of pain.
Yet if we are bold,
love strikes away the chains of fear
from our souls.
We are weaned from our timidity
In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.

MLK Monday

I hope everyone had a good weekend and are enjoying the Martin Luther King Holiday today, spending time with your family, thinking of what you can do for your fellow man and reflecting on the values of Dr. King. This holiday is especially special with what will take place tomorrow with the swearing in of our 44th president, Barack Obama, his victory made possible by the efforts of the great MLK.

Of course the world does not change overnight but I’m feeling so hopeful and proud of the very significant change that will take place tomorrow. A New Day is coming. How will you welcome it? Me? I will with a grateful heart.

15 Happy Birthday Dear Twins!

15 is the magic number, yes it is, it's the magic number...

Did you know that throughout the bible the number 15 has been thought to symbolize: deliverance, divine grace, restoration, restitution, resurrection and healing? All wonderful thoughts for you my two loves this year.

Here are some examples taken from here.

-The Ark was borne by the Flood fifteen cubits upwards, Genesis 7:20.
-Hezekiah's reprieve from death was fifteen years, 2 Kings 20:6.
-The Jews were delivered from death under Esther on the fifteenth day of the month (9:18,21). This is specially significant, as we have seen, that their sentence to death was connected with the number thirteen.
-Bethany, where Lazarus was raised, and from whence the Lord ascended, was fifteen furlongs from Jerusalem, John 11:18.
-Paul's ship anchored safely in fifteen fathoms on the 14th day, after thirteen days of toil and trial, Acts 27:21.
-On the fifteenth day of the first month was the feast of unleavened bread, Leviticus 23:6; and
-On the fifteenth day of the seventh month was the feast of Tabernacles (v 34).

Oh, can it really be true, that you two are 15? Nah. It just can't be. I close my eyes and it was yesterday that I was holding both of you in my one arm and balancing two bottles with my other hand. It felt so overwhelming, but I took solace in thinking that God gave me two arms and two babies for a reason. You know, I can still feel the weight on that arm and smell your sweet smells. It's so very real, every smile, every tear, every wail. From yesterday, to today, to forever the love never ends.

Love,
Mom

Heartbeat

What’s Jack up to? Jack is having a hard time navigating in all this snow which has now turned to nasty slush and ice. Poor thing I wouldn’t want to put my paws in that either. Before you bring up doggie booties, they are so not Jack’s style or my patience. Getting his jacket on him is chore enough. Oh the joys of winter.

It's December 22nd and the holiday panic has seeped in. My to do list for the day is 1, 2, 3, 4 …17 items long and counting. Thumpity, thump, thump goes my rapid heart.

Anybody else feeling the heat on this cold day?

Well, if you’re not or even if you are and need a bit of a break check out this great new website I Heart Daily from YA writer Melissa Walker and Anne Ichikawa. It’s a daily newsletter for teen girls with features on fashion, beauty, entertainment and news. It’s super chic and oh so cool even if you’re not a teen and just want to be in the know and who doesn’t want that? Check it out here.

Happy Birthday Jack!

What's Jack up to? Jack is happy and chilling after his birthday party weekend. Well, not really a party, he is a dog after all and I'm not crazy. At least not THAT crazy.

Happy Birthday Jack!

Yep! Wild Jack turned 2 (or is it 14? I just don't get the whole dog years thing) on Saturday. Thanks for adding just a bit more more nuttiness to my already heavily topped sundae of a life, Jack.

I'm back from a fun filled and super inspirational weekend at the New Jersey Romance Writers conference. I'm exhausted, but feel the need to go to the gym and see if my membership is actually still any good thanks to Mel and this cool new blog she's starting called FatChicksRunning. Now I refuse to out myself as a Fat Chick, but really who am I fooling? Like Mel, I'm a woman of a certain age who doesn't want to be a certain size anymore and it's time to do something about that. So I'm off. Hmm... Now which way was that gym?

More on the conference soon. So much to talk about. So many smart women. So much work I need to do. Eek!

Kwana

Just Fine!

What's Jack Up to? Right now Jack is whining at the basement door. Should I take that as a hint he's is no longer interested in watching the Yankee game with the DS and wants to hang with me? Can I get a moments rest? No. Oh well. That's life. BTW I'm way sad over the ending of Yankee stadium. Part of my childhood is now gone. Big tear.

At the end of last week with all the market turmoil, constant political crap and the Dear Teens sometimes making me want to pull my hair out I was feeling deep in a cynical rut. Which is honestly is not a far from my norm. Not to mention I didn't totally agree with who got out Aufed on Project Runway and Top Model last week. UGH!
But after church on Sunday I walked out feeling just fine. Shoot, God didn't promise a life without trials, right.

So during my many errands I rolled down the windows popped MJB (Mary J Blige) in the cd player and hit the gas. Hard.

Do me a favor, try and not stress too much this week. It's all going to be just fine. Do what you gotta do and Crank it up!

And Happy Birthday to Ma! What can I say? Much Love. K.

Best,
Kwana
