Clubbing It

Happy April Fool's Day. I hope yours is a quiet one and any jokes played are indeed playful.

In honor of April Fool's Day I'm joining in with other bloggers for a worthy cause: April Food Day. Bloggers getting together for very worthy cause. I don't have to tell you my friends what's going on. Times are tougher than ever.

People who never had a worry before are now turning to food banks for help and finding that the shelves are bare. There is not enough food being donated to meet the sudden rise in demand.

Every dollar contributed provides seven meals or 10 pounds of food. A gift of $25 provides 75 meals. If you'd like to make a donation to Feeding America (formally second harvest) click here. You can make a difference today.
Now without any appropriate transition except to say I am truly blessed, last night I attended our first meeting of our newly formed book/social club. Now I think we’ve come up with just the right way of how to handle a book club unlike some of the clubs from this NYT article I blogged about here. We decided to make the club not too heavy, but lighter, more low key by not having anyone host. Instead we choose a restaurant to go out to and have some eats and drinks and lots of chat ‘bout. How can you not have a good time with that?

Our first selection was: Trail of Crumbs: Hunger, Love, and the Search for Home by Kim Sunee.

It was a good first book full of emotion, colorful imagery and amazing food. A feast for the senses. The book sparked a lively discussion that had us chatting well past our food, drinks and later our coffee. Or maybe we just were not in a rush to get home to our kids and husbands. Hmm...

We’re now busy thinking of what the next book will be. I can’t wait.

Do any of you belong to a book club?
I never thought I would, but with this combo of easygoing friends and a nice night out I’m having loads of fun.

Best,
Kwana

Hi Kwana,

I use to belong to a club a couple of years ago. The thing was we would read the book but never had time to talk about the book. We were too busy talking about other things!

I think I might enjoy Trail of Crumbs: Hunger, Love, and the Search for Home. It sounds like something right up my alley. I will see if I can pick it up this weekend. Thanks!xoxo

I belong to a book club many years ago, it was way to serious of a group. I always tried to pick lighter books (Oprah picks) and they were all into classic and would never read my picks! Love to be in another kinda forces you to branch out.

I do belong to a book club - this month we're reading Prayer for Owen Meany and I'm not a John Irving fan.

Hi Kwana! I used to belong to a lovely group of book reading women but I felt the format was too much (for me) it involved making dinner, blah blah blah.... lots of work. Enjoyed the group and the books, but not all the work so I now belong to our local library book discussion group. We meet on the 3rd Saturday of every month at 3 pm. The library provides the books, and there are treats too. Very nice, no cooking or cleaning and free books... (we have to give the books back too) Enjoyable titles, nice people.

I've always wanted to join a book club, but I never have. It sounds like it's a lot of fun! Good conversation, food and the company of friends - what's not to love! :-)

There's a romance reader's circle at a B&N near me, but I don't go that often. I have so much other stuff to do! Like write!

Good on you for drawing attention to a good cause.

I dearly miss my old book club, which I quit due to moving. To be honest, I probably would have quit anyways - as that one NYT article pointed out, sometimes the new people additions change a club beyond recognition. Mine started skewing towards the "let's kvetch about our husband and occasionally read fluff" type.

Will have to look into that book your group is reading - looks interesting!

How do you do it? I always wanted a book club but can't seem to find time. One day, mark my words, I will make this happen. It's something really interesting to hear what others have to say...it's a nice angle to see all the differences and similarities in opinions.

You are way cool!

That sounds like fun! I'm just finishing Trail of Crumbs. Thinking about what's next on my reading list.

Thanks for the comments I have to say talk always turns to hubbies and kids and all that but we did keep coming back to the book.

We just pick the next book: The Ten Year Nap by Meg Wolitzer. I'm looking forward to it.

Sounds like a good book - I need to head to Amazon and check it out. I wish I had time to be a part of a book club. I love reading and discussing books. Lucky you!

I read this book in only 3 days. I adored it. Really got me thinking of how far I have come with Jesus by my side.
